Questions from peers:
Q: about 2 months ago a good friend of my boyfriends committed suicide. The parents of the boy are not coping too well but my boyfriend is trying to cope with it, but he is finding it hard. He cannot sleep, concentrate on some of his school work, but when i see him he seems fine, he says it is because when i am around he is happy. What should i do to help him? What can i say to help him through this time??
- Anonymous
A: First, your boyfriend is lucky that you are so caring and so interested in his well being, and it appears that he notices that in you ... so trust your instinct. Allowing someone to grieve is tricky, despite what your intentions are, the person who are trying to support needs room to think it all through. They need to identify what they need help with and then feel safe asking for it. Your role as a friend, partner is to be a good listener, give him space and support and allow him time to feel what he feels. Do not put pressure on yourself to "do or say the right thing" - say what is in your heart and be patient.
